A TV Challenge… Can you do it?
Sunday, November 5th, 2006I am not sure about you, but my normal day, and daily life, is pretty full.
There is an early start, travel to work, work, late finish, travel, then home. I have to cook, eat, clean and wash. Time is given to my family and friends, mostly on the weekends, and then I do try to get some sleep mixed in amongst all of that.
After all of the above, there is not much time for anything else.
The discipline I find to do the basic things, is intensive. Cooking of course involves shopping. There is also some preparation for the day ahead required. Cleaning, washing, and general maintenance of myself and my material possesions is another duty that demands some diligence and respect, and so basically, what I am getting at, is that I do not seem to have much free time.
One of the now, most ancient of all communications technologies, is the television. I am just about to put mine out in my garage… There is simply no value in watching it… and definitely, for me, no time to watch it, even if I wanted to…
If I want to relax, then I will play some music, a musical instrument, draw, read, write, and or simply sit in a quiet room and muse.
The TV will make it’s way to mobiles, and I am thinking that it will be a big hit for a number of reasons, the main being that many people have simply lost all ability to spend their free time any other way.
People do not seem to be able to amuse themselves without a TV.
Three hours of TV every day for a period over forty years… This equates to someone spending close to 2000 days of their life staring at a square screen, or five and a half years of their lives.
I am not to sure, but I am thinking, that if I ever reach 60 years of age, and then look back and realise that I had spent 5 years of my life watching the television, I am pretty sure that if I couldn’t kick myself hard enough, then I would find someone who could.
Communication technologies are fantastic. I use them as tools to accomplish certain tasks, but I try not to let them use me, as in the end, life is surely meant to be something more.
Cover your tv up and leave it turned off for 1 week… I dare you… see what happens. It’s not as easy as you may think.
