Life is good, and always amusing…

Here we are, in the 21st century. We have jumped in quick succession from having computers that filled rooms, then they appeared on our desks, our laps, and now, well, we have mini computers in our pockets.

It seems the technology has exponentially exploded. It also seems that our communication power has also blasted off into orbit.

So we have amazing communications technology and power… You would think that the sharing of our ideas, thoughts, and general language communication would be elevating us all, evolving us in great leaps and bounds towards bringing us all together, closer, and as nature truly is, as one.

Now I take the train. This is the scene…

We have people on the train, many people on the train, all in together, all close to each other (in proximity), and in many cases, you have people from all backgrounds and cultures actually sitting right next to each other. And there is not much space, the seats are not that large, so there are people touching even, in close proximity to each other.

Half or more of the people in my train carriage are disconnected from each other by some form of headphones and media device. No one on the train talks to each other, even if you are sitting right next to them. Not even a ‘hello’.

So who are we?

We seem to be a race of people with the most amazing communications and technology power, unable to talk to the person next to us in a seat.

I am all for the communications power, and I am all for the technology. But what I see, is that we are only able to communicate to each other via the comfort of the technology.

Do you think you are a good communicator?

Next time your on the train or bus, test yourself out. Take out your headphones and turn to the person next to you and say ‘hello’ Have a conversation. Go back to your roots for a moment.

This will only enable you to communicate more effectively via the technology. Hey, communication technology is a tool that you can utilise… remember… to communicate

Aah I have awoken to another glorious sunny day, proceeded to make my way into work, a building, and finally office.

It hardly seems fair or the right thing to do.

I can see out of huge windows and do look out across the city and harbour which is hardly something that anyone could complain about, and I am not, for I do realise that there are those who are in offices surrounded by walls, without windows, city views, and harbours.

Seeing though is tempting.

Here we are immersed in new communications technologies which are flash and capable, yet there are still limits.

I still know people who use their mobile to send text messages, make calls, and put the alarm clock manufacturers of the world out of business, waking themselves up every morning.

Their mobiles could plan their day, allow them to access the mobile internet, and make video calls to their friends, but the education, the laziness, and in some cases the infrastructure to back them up on these amazing pursuits, is making for a mobile device that is in most cases hardly utilised.

It is amusing, that people simply have to have all the bells and whistles, but yet then never use them, and or never know how to use them.

And then there are people like me, who are trying to coordinate and hook up all of the available technology so that we can communicate and work, making use of the technologies, to not only look out over the harbour from an office space, but to hopefully get out on to the harbour, and leave the ‘office’ space behind.

Although, I am not sure how much work would get done out on the harbour… I guess it’s all a balance

I had not been in touch completely with the new developments in notebook computers for almost a year and a half, and as can be expected after that amount of time, plenty has changed to where out of touch, was more akin to on another planet… far far away.
So the weekend was spent learning about what notebooks were out there… What they now could do… And how much damage purchasing one was going to inflict on my coloured paper resources.

You do of course get more bang for your buck these days from a year and a half ago, but there are also bigger bangs available for bigger bucks, as the technology roll out spread does it’s best to extract more money from you more often.

I thought I would take my own advice for once, and work out clearly in the first place, what end result it was that I wanted. What did I want the technology to do for me?

This is a crucial base stage for anyone delving into the realms of a technology purchase that we all should know by now, as without having a clear idea as to what you want or need the technology to achieve, then you can easily spend way to much money on technology that does not do what you want it to do… Or on technology that does too much for what you need it to do.

If you do only want to access the internet, write word documents, and play solitaire, then chances are that you do not need a computer that can control space satellites.

Then you need a whole lot of discipline.

Once you walk into that retail super nova you better have your technology aim written down or etched into your forehead with a maximum spend amount locked in. Avoiding the bedazzling bright lights and the all consuming range that is available is not an easy task.

Let’s face it, keep this clear in your mind, there will always be a bigger, brighter, larger, more capable, larger capacity machine and technology with one more blinking light on the shelf.
So I know now what I want to do, what I need to get that done, and roughly how much it is going to set me back, now all I have to do is spend my money quickly before I can be tempted to control space satellites
